The Alternative Information Center’s Statement on the Palestinian Elections

On January 25th 2006 the Palestinian people conducted a clean legislative election, devoid of significant violence, intimidation, or interference. For this, the AIC would like to extend its congratulations. The clean election process proves that even under occupation and in the face of immense international pressure the Palestinian people are determined to exercise their democratic rights.

The AIC believes that the ruling factions must accept the election results and peacefully turn over power. It is important to maintain national unity in these difficult times and avoid internal struggle. If internal violence breaks out, the only victims are sure to be the democratic process itself and the Palestinians.

We also hope that all of the political parties will participate in the new Palestinian legislature, and that this government expresses the interests and aspirations of the Palestinian people. The election results demonstrate a desire for change after a decade of Fatah rule; it would be unfortunate to see ten years of Fatah hegemony replaced by ten more from Hamas.

The AIC also believes that the international community must refrain from placing any outside pressure on the new Palestinian government. External forces must respect the democratic will of the Palestinian people. There is no room for outside interference on the part of Israel or any other country due to displeasure over the election outcomes.
