Working Committees
Madison-Rafah Sister City Project
24-Apr-05

Children & Education Committee
The Children & Education Committee has completed Playground for Rafah Campaign to rebuild a playground destroyed in January 2004. The committee is now working on text book and equipment drives for Rafah schools. For more information, contact RafahSisterCity@yahoo.com.

City Council Committee
The City Council Committee's goal is to have the City of Madison officially recognize our sister city status with Rafah. We have joined the Madison Sister Cities Coalition, secured a number of endorsements and letters of support, and set up an Advisory Committee of individuals. After much debate, and more than four hours of public testimony, the Madison Common Council on July 21, 2004 voted 9-8 in favor of recognition, falling two votes short of the 11 needed for passage. Events in Rafah are much more visible than before, and support for the project continues to grow. We will consider re-introducing the resolution to the Council in the future. For more information, contact RafahSisterCity@yahoo.com.

Delegation Committee
The Delegation Committee organized an initial trip to Rafah for 12-18 January 2004, but only one of three delegates was admitted by Israel. The reports from this delegation are published in Correspondence. We hope to send a larger delegation in the future. For more information, contact RafahSisterCity@yahoo.com.

Health Committee
The Health Committee is concerned with the effects of the occupation on health care, including nutrition, supplies, and access to care. We are currently working on the Milk to Rafah campaign to send powdered milk from Wisconsin to Rafah. We are also planning an emergency response network for human rights violations. For more information, contact RafahSisterCity@yahoo.com.

Literature Table Committee
The Literature Table Committee provides public outreach on Palestine and Rafah by tabling and leafleting events. The committee's literature has drawn much interest at the Madison Farmer's Market, the Reporting the Middle East speaker series, and other events. For more information, contact RafahSisterCity@yahoo.com.

Public Events Committee
The Public Events Committee will be organizing a film and speakers series for both fundraising and community education. We have several good films (Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land and Palestine is Still the Issue) and speakers in mind, and hope to run the series from October to December. For more information, contact RafahSisterCity@yahoo.com.

Women's Committee
The Women's Committee is involved in three key projects: Rafah Child Sponsorship with KinderCare, Rafah Craft Sales, and Gaza Community Mental Health Support and Pen Pals. For more information, contact RafahSisterCity@yahoo.com.
